Tesla Solar Roof

Check out this solar roof by Tesla being installed in a new custom Sopris Home in Boulder, Colorado. This design of this home has roots in our highly popular Aspen model and it is the second home we have built for these clients. The roof was installed by Weddle and Sons Roofing, a highly skilled roofer and Tesla specialist based in Manhattan, KS with multiple regional offices.

As you might have guessed, this home will have a Tesla battery system or Powerwall in addition to a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. This is a super efficient house to say the least.

There is growing interest in Solar Roofing Systems in many our new homes. Many people also take solace in not being dependent on the power grid in addition to having a clean energy source that is better for the environment and can add to the overall appeal of the home. Which solar system is right for you depends on a variety of individual factors. If you are a fan of Tesla cars or the brand in general, you’ll probably will be a fan of their Solar Roofing Systems.

Discover the Glen Haven

The Glen Haven is our newest plan in the Sopris Portfolio of homes. This 2,538 square foot ranch model packs a massive amount of amenities into a relatively economical space and features most of the touches we have always been known for including a covered porch and patio to bring the outside in, owners entryway from the three car garage to organize your essentials, a large kitchen and grand room that truly is and great space for dining and entertaining.

This model was built with Heron Lakes in mind, but we think it will be popular in many other Sopris Communities (link) as well. New Glen Haven Plan for Sale in Heron Lakes

It’s been several years since Sopris Homes has started a new home that has not been pre-sold. Typically our clients choose one of our lots with a corresponding home plan that they can modify. We feel we build in the best Colorado Communities, but we can also build on your lot as well. Nevertheless it’s exciting once again for us to be offering a new home for sale.

Introducing the Castle Rock

Many use one of our base plans as a starting point in designing their Custom Sopris Dream Home as our models are a blending evolution of both form and function and represent years of building experience and client feedback.

The New Castle is no different. It was initially designed to maximize efficiency and views in our Heron Lakes Community, however, the design is a tribute to modern Colorado living in every way.

Entering the home from the covered front porch, the foyer provides immediate access to a vaulted and private guest suite. At of the center of the foyer you’ll see the dining room to the right and a half-bath to the left.
The Owner’s Entry, a place to drop shoes and outside activities in a cubby, hang coats and de-stress without the muss after your daily or weekend activity.

High ceilings enhance your natural surroundings and add volume to the living areas while still retaining a sense of creature comfort. A gas fireplace adds warmth to the Grand Room, where entertainment area comes complete with a wood mantle, raised hearth and built in TV space. An adjacent Covered Terrace further creates a sense a place and brings the outdoors in.

Directly adjacent is an awe-inspiring kitchen, including an oversized center island and ample seating for the family, upscale cabinetry. A large walk-in pantry and sunny nook complete the “heart of the home,” to make the New Castle a place to call your own and appreciate for years to come.

The Farm at Woodridge Gem

Check out these pics of one of our new homes recently completed at The Farm at Woodridge. While modified, this new Colorado home is based on our very popular Maybell model and features:

2,861 main floor sq. ft.
1,680 sq. ft basement finished
4 bedrooms, 4.5 bath, study, sitting area, bonus space, covered patio, 3-car garage and more…

In addition you’ll notice one of our standard 16.8 kWatt solar array on the rear roof of the home. The system is capable of producing the majority of the power requirements. In our Colorado climate an average 15kW solar array produces approximately 23,000 kWh (kilowatt-hours) annually. The average U.S. household utilizes about 10,400 kWh per year.

Solar Roofing Tiles

As a leader in high-performance energy efficient homes in Colorado for over two decades, Sopris Homes is often asked what’s up with the much hyped Tesla Solar Roof Shingles that Elon Musk promised us back in 2016?

If you ask ask around, including inquiries to Tesla you’ll get many answers. We have yet to use the Tesla Solar Shingles, but we have used the Apollo® II by CertainTeed on an award-winning new home in Boulder, CO last year.

One advantage of the CertainTeed solar roofing shingles its Apollo II solar shingles have been available for about five years now. New products are great, but they are better when they have been tested outside of Southern California or their test homes. CertainTeed is an old company with a new name; it was originally (in 1904) General Roofing Manufacturing Company. Now, it’s a subsidiary of building product company Saint-Gobain, and it specializes not just in roofing but other building products as well.

Apollo II Solar shingles by CertainTeed

Apollo II also functions as your roof, generating clean power while protecting your home from water intrusion. Features include:

• Efficiency: 14 high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon solar cells provide a power rating of 60 watts per solar shingle.
• Simplicity: Apollo II solar shingles are installed directly into the roof sheathing using standard deck screws.
• Lightweight: The Apollo II system weighs about as many pounds per square foot as a typical asphalt shingle.
• Durable: Even though Apollo II shingles are lightweight, they are designed to be strong. The solar shingles have been tested and rated to withstand 250 pounds per square foot.
• Wind resistant: The Apollo II system achieves the highest wind rating available for roofing materials and can be installed in wind zones of up to 150 miles per hour.
• Watertight: Water channels and raised fastener locations provide added protection against water intrusion. CertainTeed was a roofing company before a solar company so they can manufacture a system that doesn’t leak.
